Discerning diners have voted for a much-loved café to win a prestigious award for the second year running.

Weymouth Football Club Café has been crowned the winner of Dorset Echo's Café of the Year competition 2022.

The café came out on top following hundreds of votes and nominations for cafés across the area.

Owner Matt Avant said he was 'delighted' to have won the competition for a second time.

He said: "I think people voted for us because we offer value for money and consistency. They know exactly what they're going to get."

The café, within the grounds of the Bob Lucas Stadium off Radipole Lane, has been open for 13 years and can serve 65 covers.

Matt said its success is down to his hard-working team, whose full English breakfasts are in much demand. The most popular items on the menu are the giant breakfast at £7.95 and standard breakfast at £6.95.

Vegetarian options are offered and people can modify their breakfasts to their liking, Matt said.

Other fare on offer includes bacon sandwiches, omelettes, toasties, fish and chips and mouthwatering puddings such as sticky toffee and hot fudge brownies.

The café has a changing board highlighting different produce, such as information about sausages used in the breakfasts with a choice of 'the meaty one' or 'the herby one' and offers such as two slices of black pudding for £1.

It could be said that the dog-friendly café is a bit of a 'local's secret'.

Matt said: "We do get a lot of local people and during the summer we get a lot of people with caravans and camper vans because of the big car park.

"I suppose because of our lack of visibility a lot of people don't know we're here.

"In a way I guess we're a bit of a throwback to the 1970s.

"We've been a tenant of the football club for the past 13 years and when I took over it was quite run down and we didn't have as much space for as many covers as we have now."

The football club café is open seven days a week, Monday to Friday 7am to 2pm, Saturday 7am to 1pm and on Sunday from 8am to 12.30pm.
