Abbotsbury

  • DESPITE the awful weather the Chesil Bank Pre-school May Fayre held on Saturday, May 17th was a great success.

Alison Roberts tells me that a fantastic £880 was raised for the pre-school.

The committee would like to say a very special thank you to the parents, grandparents, children and staff who helped in the run up and on the day. It couldn't have happened without them.

Thanks also go to Annabel the face painter, Ali Telfer, Sue Snape and Abbie who valiantly provided pony rides despite the deluge and Geoff their DJ and ice cream seller.

Sarah Pilcher, our local Police Community Support Officer judged the face painting competition. The lucky winner was Sam Matthews who was a tiger.

  • Abbotsbury Residents Corps (ARC) has a project to encourage children in Abbotsbury to take photos in and around the village of things that appeal to them or not as the case may be.

They plan hold an exhibition next year.

ARC is appealing for gifts of old digital cameras for the youngsters or information regarding a cheap source of basic digi cameras.

Contact the organiser of the project, Barbara, on 01305 871532 if you can help.

  • The ARC research into a cooperative oil-purchasing scheme for the villages is gathering pace.

Peter Evans tells me that over 70 residents have registered their interest some from as far away as Buckland Ripers.

More are needed to make the project viable so residents are urged to fill in the slip in the Chesil Magazine. These can also be found in Abbotsbury and Portesham post offices.

The slips can be left at the post offices or sent to 7, West Street, Abbotsbury,DT34JT . For more information look at the ARC website www.abbotsbury-residents-corps.org.uk/ or contact Peter on 871527.

  • West Dorset District Council as part of their Connecting Dorset scheme have gifted to the village a laptop computer and colour printer.

These are available for anyone to use and are based in Strangways Hall. They can be used to produce fliers, posters, spreadsheets and leaflets. There will probably be a charge for producing over a dozen copies, to cover ink and paper.

A taster session will be held in the hall on Saturday, June 21, just drop in. Contact the chairman and booking officer for the hall, Dave Stevens, to book the computer.

The hall also has a years free broadband which will enable villagers to download current planning applications and many other useful sites. There are four trained monitors who will be on hand to help those who are IT terrified!

  • An evening of Midsummer Merriment comes to the Tithe Barn on Saturday June 21 from 6.30pm.

The New Hardy Players will provide entertainment and will be performing a new Hardy comedy. Tim Laycock our much-loved local folk musician and composer will be on hand as will the group Crack who will provide music for dancing.

Supper of spit roasted longhorn beef or a vegetarian option is provided and is included in the ticket price of £20. These are available from 01305 871085 or 871183.

The proceeds are for St Nicholas Church Fabric Fund. And look out for a rather interesting finale!
