Cerne Abbas
- SOME of you may have come across the wartime air accident I wrote about in one of my recent columns.
This took place on August 18, 1944 and, since the request for some information has been put forward, some light has been shed on its circumstances.
The National Archives website has very informative guidance about what records are available because, not surprisingly, wartime accidents were rarely reported on due to security reasons.
The accident took possibly place in Incombe Wood (SO685990) on a rise, separating the Cerne and Piddle Valleys.
The Historical Society would like to thank everyone who contributed with information regarding this accident.
- THE society's next talk will take place on Thursday, May 29 at the usual venue, the village hall.
It will be held by John Charman and is entitled "The Geology of Cerne".
This talk will explore the influence that the geology of the area has had on our history, buildings and landscape.
John, who lives in the village, is a geologist with an intriguing insight into why many of Cerne's houses are constructed from the patchwork quilt of materials seen when the buildings are renovated.
This talk will be followed by a village walkabout on Friday, June 6 to put geological theory into practice.
More details on this to follow.
- CADS (Cerne Abbas Dramatic Society) would like to thank everyone who took part or supported this year's Spring Collection in any way.
There has been some interest already about the next production and the answer will depend on suitable material.
It is likely to take place at the end of this year or early in 2009 and if you are interested in taking part in whatever capacity, please let the organisers know.
They are Barbara Hallett (01300 341467) and Sandy Morrell (01300 341332).
- CACH (Cerne Abbas Care Home) is pleased to announce the opening of a cafe.
Marion Saunders, the entertainment organiser, was the driving force behind the conversion of the conservatory into a cafe, for the use of the residents.
Two beautiful murals have been painted by local artists, Jenny Mortimer and Jill Warren, together with a budding artist called Tony Frater.
The Care Home's bus takes residents out on trips on Mondays and Wednesdays in the afternoon and is often short of helpers.
Are you able to join the team and take a look at the new cafe at the same time?
If so, please contact Helen Smith on 01300 341995.

- A SUMMER Serenade will take place on Saturday, June 14 at 2.30pm.
It is strongly recommended that you put this date in your diaries since The Church of the Holy Rood will be able to welcome some talented musical artists.
These are Peter Bray (organist) and Luise Breyer-Aiton (mezzo soprano).
Classical music to suit all tastes will be played that evening and, best of all, the evening is entirely free!
In addition you will be able to hear an organ that has been totally refurbished in recent years.
Tea and cake are provided and a retiring fund will take place where you may express your appreciation.
