PEOPLE were today urged to help keep a young man and his dog on the move.

Weymouth's Seb Green is almost a quarter of the way through his round-Britain walk, having clocked up more than 1,000 miles.

With border collie Flash at his side, 18-year-old Seb is doing incredibly well as he makes his way up Scotland's east coast.

Supporters are now issuing a rallying cry to the people of Dorset and beyond to donate to the walking fund and Seb's chosen charities - the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and the Starlight Children's Foundation.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award officer for Dorset Mary Harper, who is leading the support team, said: "We want to give the fundraising a push now that Seb is nearing John o' Groats, a significant milestone.

"We have about a quarter of the total amount in the charity fund. But we also want to keep the separate walking fund topped up.

"We're allocating him £100 a week, which isn't a lot to live on when you take into account food, campsite fees, ferry fares, equipment and vet bills.

"If a campsite waives a fee, which a few of them have, then we might suggest Seb treats himself to a steak meal. But he's not living a life of luxury.

"Worryingly, we've only got enough in the support fund to keep him going for another few weeks so we'd really like to get more in there. If we have nothing left in the fund he'll have to stop walking."

Seb has turned his life around since a foolish stunt in 2005 when he took a boat from Weymouth Harbour and ended up being rescued by the coastguard.

He planned the walk to raise £20,000 for charity - the amount he estimates to be the equivalent of the rescue.

The walk began on February 1 but Seb took a month's break in April to finish his training and become a fully-fledged Territorial Army solider.

Mrs Harper said: "John o' Groats is a psychologically important point for Seb because he'll then turn round and come back down.

"But he's not halfway round by any means. The west coast will be very demanding - there is little habitation so he'll be camping wild a lot of the time and shops are few and far between so he'll be carrying a heavier rucksack over difficult terrain."
