A SERVICE that links children with absent parents is thriving a year after it faced closure - thanks to supporters who sent money rolling in to save it.
The Dorchester Child Contact Centre appealed for funding last year to keep going.
Secretary Peter Mann said: "The Dorchester community responded magnificently to reports in the Dorset Echo that the centre faced an uncertain financial future.
"The treasurer Robin Knight records in his latest report an excellent increase in income, including donations from many local churches and community organisations."
He added: "I am pleased to say that a year on from that appeal for funds our future is secure."
The service has also noticed a growth in demand and now has a short waiting list. During the past year 14 fathers and six mothers have re-established contact with their families. Grandparents have also been involved.
Mr Knight stated: "Our good work can definitely carry on."
The centre, which operates in Charles Street on two Saturdays a month, enables children to have contact with relatives that they have lost touch with, typically following a divorce or separation of their parents.
Oliver Letwin, MP for West Dorset, praised the role of the centre in helping improve children's lives.
He said: "I observe a several-fold increase in relationship breakdowns, an escalation of fear and abuse, and a significant increase in the number of young children affected by relationship breakdowns.
"We cannot rest content with the level of relationship breakdown in our society but I am glad to say this centre is making a real difference in children's lives and I do want to say thank you."
Centre chairman, the Rev Paul Arnold, said: "We are extremely grateful for the outstanding work of our co-ordinator Brenda Blackler and her wonderful team of volunteer staff and to all the churches and organisations that have given so much splendid support."
Use of the service offered by the centre is arranged through a solicitor, family court welfare officer, social worker or family mediator.
The centre is independent and opened in 2001. During the past year 25 children aged between three months and 10 years had attended and 20 families had been involved.
The service relies on volunteers who undergo training.
