LOCAL lovelies have started battling it out for the special title of Dorchester Carnival Queen 2008.

The first round of the contest at the King's Arms Hotel saw three finalists shortlisted for the crown.

The girls were chosen after a fashion display and questions from the judges. They are 25-year-old hairdresser Shelley Walton, 28-year-old financial analyst Carla MacQueen and 22-year-old receptionist Kylie Willsher.

Organiser Wendy Allwood said: "The girls are not just judged on what they look like, the judges also look at their personalities. We are trying to pitch this role as an ambassador for Dorchester.

"It's not just about someone who's going to look pretty, it's someone who will open events and be able to get involved in things in the run-up to the carnival."

The judging panel was made up of carnival sponsors including Magna Housing director David Aldwinckle and hairdresser Ali Courtney.

Last year's Carnival Queen Emmaly Ring also attended to judge and support the new hopefuls.

Prizes up for grabs by the girls will include £50 and a meal for two for the winner, £25 each for the runners-up and chocolates.

Dorchester Carnival will take place between June 19 and 21 this year. It is organised by the Dorchester Round Table.
