Upwey 19 May
- THERE are alternatives to watching the Cup Final and some of us found our way instead to the spring exhibition of the Weymouth Model Railway Association at the Memorial Hall in Upwey.
The hall was a-buzz with trains running, on time, on beautifully made tracks, through realistic towns and countryside.
Most of the rolling stock, all the locations and the electrical works are handmade by members of the society, many of whom have engineering backgrounds and obviously a love of trains. This intricate and very accurate work must take hours to complete and brings great pleasure to participants.
There was a lovely opportunity also for the next generation of model railway enthusiasts to find out how to make things go - the society has a set of larger model trains and it was good to see the youngsters enjoying themselves.
The society holds two exhibitions a year and the next one will be at Wey Valley School in September when enthusiasts from all over the county and beyond will be coming to share their models.
The Weymouth Association is 20 years old and has 40 members, meeting every Monday evening at the Memorial Hall in Victoria Avenue. David Riches is the secretary, contact him for further information on 784672 or e.mail drdriches@aol.com.
- WELLDRESSING at the Wishing Well is holding up well and should last a little longer if you haven't already seen it. The theme this year is Ancient Britain, showing Maiden Castle and Stonehenge.
Donations are to be given to the Old School to enable better access for wheelchair users.
- THE Old School has also benefited to the tune of £800 from the 100+ club.
Di Pattinson would like to thank all those who have invested so generously and hopes you will continue to do so.
Latecomers can contact her on 813539 and they'll have chances to win the good monthly prizes.
- BEGINNING on Saturday May 24 is the bi-annual feast of arts and crafts throughout Dorset which runs for two weeks.
There are art exhibitions in many studios around the county and Upwey offers its fair share.
Anita Elizabeth Law, artist and illustrator, will be showing her work, themed on nature, at the Reynolds Institute on Dorchester Road only on the May bank holiday weekend from 11.00am-4.00pm.
At the Old School, the Upwey Potters will be at it again with some hands-on opportunities for you to try your skills.
And while you're there, you might like to look around the playground where there will be a bring-and-buy plants and garden produce.
- THERE are still a few tickets left, priced £2.50 each, for the BBC Gardeners Question Time which will be broadcast from St. Francis Church at Littlemoor on Monday June 10.
The team are the guests of the Upwey and Broadwey Horticultural Society and you should send a stamped addressed envelope and the right money to Sue Brant, the secretary, if you would like to go.
- ST. LAURENCE Church spring sale achieved over £800 for church expenses and the windows appeal which greatly pleased the organizers - Jackie's bacon butties always go down a treat.
The appeal for funds to replace and repair the windows is going very well with lots of events to look forward to.
