CASH-strapped pensioners are struggling to resolve disputes over their rising gas bills in Weymouth and Portland.

Volunteers from Age Concern warned that "horrendous" numbers of people were coming for help with problems, including misreadings and errors.

Volunteer Norah Riley-Smith, from Age Concern at Pilgrim House in Hope Street, said they have helped resolve 12 gas bill disputes since November. More people are being advised on continuing queries.

Mrs Riley-Smith said: "They get to the state that they are really low and upset before they come to us.

"They feel quite intimidated and some days it's horrendous with lots of people coming in here with financial problems."

Visitors to the charity have been praising the help they receive.

Hilda Francis, 90, from Spring Lane, Weymouth, asked Mrs Riley-Smith to help when she became frustrated at not receiving her over-85s discount from Southern Electric.

She said: "I rang many times and got nowhere, so I took my problem to Age Concern as I was sick and tired of the gas company. I got the money in the end but only through Norah, and I shall never forget the patience she showed."

Wholesale gas prices are reported to be at a record high for this time of year and there are fears that bills could go up further due to rising oil prices.

Chas Baker, 68, from Portland Road, had £331 in bills cleared after Mrs Riley-Smith helped British Gas realise an administrative error.

He said: "She spoke to British Gas for me as I'm not too good on the phone because of my hearing.

"British Gas scrubbed the bill completely but without Age Concern I don't know what I would have done. They've helped out lots of people like me."

The charity also helps people gain disability allowance they are not receiving by assisting in re-submitting their claims.

Age Concern moved to Pilgrim House last year and has since increased its support services.

The information and advice service now receives 1,500 calls per year and its weekly lunch clubs remain popular.

Co-ordinator Nigel Coles has installed a new computer suite with wireless broadband internet, offering tuition for £4 an hour.

The four volunteer tutors are available every weekday morning by booking in advance and can offer a home service for those who have their own computer.

Visitors are invited to attend the fortnightly coffee mornings and craft fairs at Pilgrim House from 10am-2pm from May 14. To join as a member or volunteer visit the centre or call 01305 761828.
