A REPEAT offender was told he was intelligent by a judge - before being sent to prison.

Gary Bell, 24, of Conifer Way in Southill, Weymouth, was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment when he was committed to Dorchester Crown Court.

He had previously pleaded guilty to three counts of failed bail, assault and two public order offences.

His crimes put him in breach of a suspended prison sentence given last year for theft and breach of an Antisocial Behaviour Order.

Judge Christopher Harvey Clark said: "It's disappointing to see you here today. You are an intelligent man and, when sober and free from drugs, you have an insight into your own personality."

The court was told that the two public order offences happened late at night last year in Weymouth - the first outside Harry's nightclub and the second near the Esplanade.

Joanna Morrissey, prosecuting, said Bell had also made threats to door staff and spat in the face of a bouncer when ejected from Rendezvous nightclub last October.

Frank Abbott, mitigating, said Bell had been subject to many different types of order in the past.

Mr Abbott said: "He had a drug and drink problem at the given time.

"He was behaving in a thoroughly antisocial manner.

"He went to London to live with his mother for a while and that's why he did not attend court. He needed to get away from Weymouth."

Judge Harvey Clark said: "I have to send you to prison today because of the number of cases and the kind of cases.

"I hope that when you come out of prison you can start afresh."

He activated Bell's suspended prison sentence for four months and added five months for his new offences.
