Spare a thought for a member of the police force I spoke with yesterday.

He had been told by his superior to caution cyclists riding along the Weymouth Esplanade and to issue them a ticket.

Now the Echo has reported that the council has given the go-ahead for cyclists to breach the no-cycling byelaw.

What sort of message does this send to the people of Weymouth? Why undermine the authority of the police to uphold the law?

Coun Christine James is quoted as apologising for the delay in amending the byelaws'.

Who is going to apologise to pedestrians who will have to face the hazards of increasing numbers of cyclists on what is effectively a pavement?

The Echo photo shows cyclists wearing protective helmets. Will pedestrians on Weymouth Esplanade be advised to follow suit?

In the case of accidents, who will be held responsible? Will the council be providing insurance cover?

I am all in favour of cycling but will someone explain why cycling is to be allowed on the promenade and Esplanade when cycle routes are already available.

I notice that a cycle hire business has opened at Overcombe - which route will their customers be taking - cycle route or promenade?

For generations, Weymouth Esplanade has been a peaceful place to stroll without fear of being knocked over.

Sadly, for young and old, the Weymouth seafront is about to become a no-go area.
