THE CRICKET season is now in full swing here in the village.

Abbotsbury played Parley 3rds in the first league match of the season this bank holiday weekend on a perfect May Saturday.

The ground here in West Street must be one of the most beautiful yet challenging in the country with views down the valley to the Chesil Bank.

Mick Lydford with little dog Widget and Phil Hutchings lovingly care for the pitch, and it even has its own mole catcher, Gerald Dunford.

The next home match is on Sunday, May 4 at 2pm when Abbotsbury plays Bradford Abbas. The fixture secretary is Mick Lydford widget@connectfree.co.uk

  • CALLING all knitters. Abbotsbury Residents Corps is doing its bit to help Oxfam collect 250,000 squares for a patchwork against poverty' blanket.

Each square represents one mother dying for lack of pre or postnatal care.

Knitters are invited to meet on Sunday, May 18 from noon-1pm at Strangways Hall to find out more.

Each house in the village has been letter dropped with the basic pattern and more details.

Double knitting wool or spare size 8 needles can be taken to Bellenies's Bakehouse or to Bec Friesleben, 36 West Street. Tel. 01308 871958.

Finished squares must be handed in to these places by Saturday, 26 July.

Langton Herring

THE FLAGPOLE and weather vane at St Peter's Church has been restored and re-erected.

Renovated, treated, greased and polished by Austen, Malcom and Elsie and carefully replaced by Alan, Steve, Michael and Malcom it is now available for celebrations.

What a marvellous job they have done and how good it will be to see Langton's landmark back in place.

Drop a note into Judy Barrett at Lantern Cottage with a note of date, celebration and name of the lucky person plus £1, or 50p for children and a flag will be flown in their honour.

Anyone reading the card, which will be pinned to the tower will be celebrating with you.
