In response to the letter Crack down on drunken crime' from C. J. Neil, of Dorchester (Echo, April, 29), I too am concerned about the wide availability of cheap alcohol and the problems it causes.
This issue remains a policing priority and we continue to work together with trading standards officers to target irresponsible retailers selling to under age drinkers.
Last year, in Dorset, trading standards officers supported by local police carried out more enforcement operations than in any previous year.
Dorchester remains one of the safest towns in England, over the last three years overall crime in the town and surrounding rural areas has reduced by 27 per cent, with burglaries down by 46 per cent and vehicle crime by 29 per cent. Violent crime has reduced by nine per cent.
If Mr Neill would care to contact me and hopefully provide us with some more detail regarding some of the issues raised, we can investigate them further.
