I can recall a feeling of disquiet when, as a young man in 1952, I heard of the death of King George VI.

That popular monarch presided over a united nation through a devastating war and period of austerity during reconstruction of the country.

His passing represented a major disruption to national life at a time when folk were more certain of their national identity and confidant that as a nation could cope with whatever problems arose.

Seven decades later, that confidence is gone.

Our generation struggles to come to terms with an alien lifestyle.

The late Queen Elizabeth has been the one constant reminder of life as we knew it.

By her exemplary conduct at all times, unswerving loyalty to her country, unstinting work for that country and dedication to her faith she exemplified the standards that we endeavoured to live by.

Her Majesty’s son and heir, King Charles III as Prince Charles has more than proved his credentials and given the chance will prove to be a great king.

It is to be hoped that the people and press give him their full support.
