FIREFIGHTERS were called to tackle a large blaze after a combine harvester caught fire and flames started spreading to crops.
Crews raced to Shipton Gorge, near Bridport, at 3.39pm yesterday after a combine harvester caught fire.
Approximately 600sq metres of crops were completely destroyed as a result of the fire.
A spokesman for Bridport Fire Station said: "Both pumping appliances and the water carrier were mobilised to a harvester on fire in Shipton Gorge which in turn had set fire to the crops and was at risk of spreading to surrounding hedges.
"On arrival crews got work using four hose reel jets and beaters. An assistance message was sent requesting for two L4Ts (small off road vehicles). These came from Beaminster Fire Station and Crewkerne Fire Station.
"Approximately 600sq metres of standing and cut crop were involved and the harvester was completely destroyed.
"Crews used four hose reel jets, one main line, two breathing apparatus wearers, one L4T, beaters, small tools and approximately 15000lts of water to extinguish the fire."
