A groom-to-be who has been diagnosed with incurable cancer is carrying out a daring feat in aid of a charity that has helped him.

John Calway of Dorchester will carry out a wing walk for Dorset-based bowel cancer charity the Ducks and Drakes Cancer Trust.

He was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer a year ago, aged 42. The cancer is now stage 4 with spread to John's lungs and is sadly incurable.

John is doing the charity wing walk later this summer after he marries fiancee Sarah Grant.

He will be carrying out the aerial challenge nine days after receiving a round of chemotherapy.

It will be John's second fundraiser for Ducks and Drakes, having previously raised funds for the Trust by helping to organise a local gig.

Sarah said “John is an incredibly strong, determined, kind and generous man. Originally from Sussex he was not aware of Ducks and Drakes until last year.

"We both feel strongly about the work that Ducks and Drakes is doing.”

Ducks and Drakes was founded to help save lives and promote wellbeing by raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer and specifically bowel cancer in young people in Dorset and in the UK.

The charity supports local cancer services, bowel cancer patients and their families through the provision of specialist medical equipment and financial aid.

John and Sarah are getting married on July 16 and the wing walk takes place on August 12. John will be having another round of chemo just nine days before the event.

Sarah said: "John's biggest worry is that his weight won’t go down to the required level for the wing walk because he has been enjoying himself a bit too much in the run up to our wedding!”

So far John's JustGiving page has raised more than £2,500 and you can donate to John's challenge at the website www.justgiving.com/fundraising/john-calway

The Ducks and Drakes Cancer Trust was founded in 2012 by Andrew Drake and his family following the bowel cancer diagnosis of Andrew, aged 24.

As part of the Trust's mission to raise awareness of bowel cancer it urges people to see their GP straight away if they have any of the following symptoms:

Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your stools

A change in bowel habit lasting for three weeks or more – especially to looser or runny stools

Unexplained weight loss

Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason

A severe pain or lump in your tummy.
