A Night at the Musicals
Weymouth Pavilion
They used to be called Weymouth Operatic Society but now, 100 years since they first got together, they are Wessex Musical Theatre and they still know how to put on a good show that audiences love.
This compilation production directed by Paulie Beecroft, (sub - correct) features songs from 17 shows that are just a fraction of the musicals they have staged since 1922 but the 39 singers and 5 musicians brought to life memorable songs from Oliver, Oklahoma, Guys and Dolls and The Boyfriend, just to name a few of the magic music that they performed on the stage.
Solo singers like Stella Brading, Darrell Hounsome, and Paul Brewster led the way with hit songs like Anything goes, Beautiful Morning, and Do you Hear the People Sing which bring back fond memories of days gone by when a visit to a show at the Pavilion was a regular treat for Dorset residents.
Largely dominated by female choral singers, the minority of men nevertheless made their mark with choruses from Les Miserables, Half a Sixpence and Pirates of Penzance not to mention the male band members led by Alistair Dean, a pianist of remarkable talent.
This hugely enjoyable production continues until Saturday June 4th and the company’s open-air singing show at the Nothe Fort on Friday 1st July is also bound to attract a large audience, given the skill and enthusiasm they have so enthusiastically demonstrated at the Pavilion. Welcome back, all of you,
MARION COX
