DRIVERS are being warned of road closures at Weymouth Harbour starting from next week.

As part of Dorset Council’s programme of improvements along Custom House Quay, the road is being resurfaced over three nights next week.

Daytime roadworks will then start from April 4, with a two-week pause over the Easter holidays, before works resume.

A new Traffic Regulation Order will also come into effect from Friday April 8. The effect of the Order will be to revoke and/or introduce parking restrictions along a section of Custom House Quay.

Why is Custom House Quay being resurfaced?

A temporary road surface has been in place since the council removed the disused harbour railway lines last year.

The final resurfacing will now take place as planned.

So the work can go ahead, Custom House Quay will be closed between The Esplanade and St Mary Street from 8pm to 6am on Monday March 28, Tuesday March 29 and Wednesday March 30.

The new wider pavement on the harbour side of the road between the fish loading bay and St Mary Street will also be resurfaced during this night work.

During the night closures, car park permit holders will be able to park in the Pavilion Car Park as per usual.

When will Custom House Quay close for daytime roadworks?

From Monday April 4, daytime 'road imprinting' work will start. Imprint surfacing is a cheaper alternative to laying paving or cobbles, but still provides a more attractive finish to tarmac.

On the carriageway, work will start on the crossing point near the Pavilion end of the road and then continue towards St Mary Street – with the road surface being imprinted with a herringbone effect from South Parade to St Mary Street.

This will be done in sections under a rolling road closure.

At the same time, imprinting works will be carried out on the harbour side footway between the fish loading bay and St Mary Street. This will be a paving slab effect. The path will be closed in sections and pedestrians will be asked to cross to the opposite pavement.

Access will be maintained for businesses as best as possible, and the imprinted surface can be driven on as soon as it has cured – roughly one hour.

Work will pause for two weeks during the Easter holidays – with all work barriers and equipment removed and the site along Custom House Quay made safe on Friday April 8.

Work will resume on Monday April 25 when imprinting and final finishing work will restart.

Cllr Ray Bryan, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Travel and Environment, said: “These final works to imprint the carriageway and footway will involve rolling footway and road closures, where the works area will change each day.

“Please be patient while our contractors carry out these specialist works and look for signage in the area for the alternative route to take.”

New benches coming to Weymouth Harbour

Concrete foundations will be put in place ready for new benches of oak and Portland Stone, and the remaining wooden posts will also start to be installed before the start of the school holidays.
