PORTLAND United boss Franklyn Clarke believes a fully-fit Liam Sayers could be a potent weapon in the Blues’ arsenal next season.

Sayers moved across to the Camp & Satherley Stadium this campaign after playing a handful of games at fellow Dorset side Bridport before and during the pandemic.

Something of a sleeping giant at Wessex League level, the former Portsmouth academy and Dorchester Town marksman possesses the pedigree to be a valuable asset for the Blues.

And, while the former Magpie has struggled with injuries during his career, Clarke believes an unbroken run of games will work wonders for both the striker and the islanders.

He told Echosport: “It’s fantastic to have Liam back, he’s had two horrible injuries a couple of years back.

“But you see it in training and when we play – he’s got loads of quality.

“It must be hard psychologically to deal with two big blows. He’s done both of his knees in the past and he’s a young lad.

“I don’t understand, myself, what that would be like to come back from. Credit to him to have the mentality to come back.

“He’s a real threat and a proper footballer. He spent most of his youth career at Portsmouth and you can really tell.

“He’s got a good touch, he’s good with his back to goal, his hold-up play’s good and he’s a goalscorer.

“It’s just getting that fitness up and getting him some game time. I’m sure his quality will show towards the end of the season and hopefully he’ll have a good summer and take it into next season.”
