A musical play chronicling the story of the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders is coming to Portland.
Yes! Yes! UCS! can be seen at Royal Manor Theatre on Portland on Friday, March 18.
The play is about the UCS ‘Work-in’ of 1971-72 and will be performed twice in Dorset as part of the Artsreach rural touring programme.
It’s 1971 and, straight out of school, Aggy McGraw gets a job at Fairfields shipyard in Govan a week before the new Tory government decides to stop investment in ‘lame duck’ industries, including shipbuilding on the Clyde. Facing an uncertain future, with nothing to lose except her job, Aggy is swept up into the famous ‘Work In’ to demonstrate that shipbuilding has a future, and that the jobs, traditions, skills and communities can be saved.
Combining powerful theatrical storytelling and animated projection with live rock and folk music from the early 70s, Yes! Yes! U.C.S! is a celebration of the community solidarity and collective resistance inspired and led by Upper Clyde Shipbuilders’ shop stewards Jimmy Reid and Jimmy Airlie.
Townsend Productions are set to perform at The Royal Manor Theatre on Portland (03336 663366) on Friday, March 18 and Studland Village Hall (07736 043532) on Saturday, March 19. Further information and tickets are also available online at artsreach.co.uk
