A TOWN council is supporting a tree planting initiative for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The Queen’s Green Canopy was launched to celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee this year and is an initiative encouraging people across the UK to plant trees to mark the occasion.

Chickerell Town Council is supporting the initiative of 'Plant A Tree for the Jubilee' with a commemorative tree planting at Willowbed Field. The planting was originally planned for National Tree Week during November 2021, but was postponed due to supply. A Salix Caprea (non-weeping willow) was planted by Town Mayor, Cllr Mrs Elspeth Turner.

She was assisted by children of Chickerell Primary Academy’s Pupil Voice Group; Josh Halls, Nyah Hines, Maisie Day, Rhea Baskerville, Louie Stalley, Elsie Bedford, Max Haynes, Millie Oldham, Poppy Dobson-Hall, Dan Sadler, and their Deputy Headteacher Mrs Lorraine Llewellyn who this year are focusing on saving our planet and supporting the local community.

The aim of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative is to encourage everyone to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees during the official planting season (October to March). Tree planting will commence again in October 2022, through to the end of the Jubilee year. With a focus on planting sustainably, the project will encourage planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which is hoped to benefit future generations.

Mayor, Cllr Mrs Turner said: “I am proud to contribute to this initiative on behalf of the Town Council and residents of Chickerell. My intended focus on green and environmental issues during my year as Mayor has been limited due to the pandemic, so thrilled to be part of this and as such I would urge businesses, schools, community groups and individuals to take part and register their tree planting on the interactive map on the Queen’s Green Canopy website.”

Further details and information about the project can be found www.queensgreencanopy.org.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.
