I am sure, like me, many Weymouth residents are dismayed at the deterioration and demise of our famous White Horse depicting King George III at Osmington.
Upon entering Weymouth from Warmwell on the A353 visitors are greeted by a sign depicting this but they must wonder where it actually is.
Strolling along our beach and promenade and looking towards Preston you cannot even make out the outline let alone any white image.
In 2018 the Echo ran an article with photos saying it had been restored to its former glory but only four years on it has all but disappeared.
In that article you stated: “Celebrity Anneka Rice was blamed for greying the monument after spreading hundreds of Portland Stone chippings on it for a Challenge Anneka TV show in 1989.” I am told this is true so any attempts to clean it up will not hide the fact that it should be chalk and not stone.
It is a travesty that when the Weymouth Relief Road was carved out of the Ridgeway Hill prior to the 2012 Olympics that someone didn’t think about using some of the many tons of chalk that was removed and taken away to restore our White Horse once and for all.
Is it true that it is the responsibility of our local council to maintain our White Horse and not English Heritage or the National Trust? If so then maybe it is time we should press for change?
I would like to be proud of our hill carving like the residents of Cerne must be regarding their Giant or the residents of Westbury of their White Horse that is in fact white.
How do we enact change?
Thank you.
