DORSET and Somerset Air Ambulance has announced the entry date of its ‘inspirational’ Cycle Challenge after disruption to the event for the last two years.
The Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge will take place Sunday, May 15 and aims to raise money for the service that receives no direct funding from Government or National Lottery.
Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance will be accepting online registrations for the event from 10am tomorrow - Tuesday January 11, and have urged those wanting to participate to register on that day as demand is expected to be extremely high.
There will be 600 places available, and participants can enter as individuals or as teams. The charity hopes that those who are fortunate to gain a place will use the opportunity to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship.
In 2020 the event was cancelled due to Covid and last year it was held in September after restrictions were lifted. The service is now happy to revert to the usual date in May, which is an extremely popular time of year.
Emma Jones, fundraising manager for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance said: “We are so delighted to be able to run our incredible Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge in May this year. This is our largest fundraising event, with many who have needed our help taking part. Some ride in memory of loved ones and some ride to ensure that we will be there for the future.”
The challenge – which covers a 55-mile route that starts at Watchet Harbour in Somerset and finishes in West Bay – has raised over £593,000 for the charity over the past 10 years. Every mission cost around £3,500 and users of the service often partake.
A spokesperson for Dorset and Somerset Air ambulance said, “It’s truly inspirational. To see someone who has needed our help in their darkest moment, then cycle 55 miles is so emotional. The finish line celebration at West Bay is wonderful place to be. To capture some of these remarkable achievements is extremely humbling for us all. For many reasons, I have a feeling that this year will be one of the most special yet.”
Online registration will open via www.dsairambulance.org.uk
