A WEEKEND fundraiser is being held at a popular nightclub in Weymouth - all in aid of children in need as part of this year's Dorset Echo Christmas Toy Appeal.

Jamie Crage of The Closet in Weymouth is holding two special fundraising events at the nightclub, in Maiden Street, on Friday, December 3 and Saturday, December 4.

Now in its 22nd year, the Dorset Echo Toy Appeal provides gifts for children facing hardship in Dorset who may otherwise not have anything to open at Christmas.

Popular band Leggomen will perform from 9pm on the first night, followed by DJ Steve Mullins, with a collection being held for the appeal.

The main event on Saturday will feature resident drag sensation Wilma Fingadoo taking to the stage, with DJ Matty spinning the tunes.

Mr Crage said: "We have held the toy appeal fundraiser for a few years now.

"We love raising money to fund the appeal because it’s a great cause.

"We hate the thought of any child going without during the festive season. We’re hoping to raise more than £1,000 to buy toys this year which we will be distributed to local shops.

"We will be holding a raffle over both nights with prizes like chocolate and drinks, hampers, and food vouchers up for grabs from just £1 a ticket.

"We will be donating all entry fees across the weekend to the Echo's toy appeal."

Last year the Dorset Echo raised its highest ever amount of £5,432 despite the pandemic, beating the previous year’s total of £4,933.05

Funds raised as a result of the appeal will be used to buy gifts and toys to make sure every child has a reason to smile this festive season.

Toys can also be donated at special collection points in Weymouth at Asda, Howleys, Morrisons, Tesco (in the town centre), WH Smith and Wilkinsons.

In Dorchester the drop-off points are at Tesco, Toymaster, WH Smith and Boo’s Toyshop, Poundbury.

On Portland collection points are at the Co-Op and Tesco in Easton, while in Bridport the bins are located at Morrisons and Toymaster.
