I regard the demolition of the large hall at the Royal Manor site as a devastating loss to Portland.
It was created as a dual purpose community hall, and both Portland TC and W&P councils put money into it for that purpose.
On 30th May 1979 Town Mayor Peter G. Harvey reported: “As a result of our efforts, we have a large hall at Tophill School which is available for community use and will be entered through a Norman Doorway provided from our Fund;
“There followed intensive negotiations with Dorset County Council to secure a fine new hall, which from 1983 became used extensively for numerous community events. There is nothing to replace it."
