EMERGENCY services were called to the scene of a crash in Bridport town centre this morning - with one eyewitness saying a van drove into a stationary truck carrying scaffolding.

It has been reported a transit van crashed into the stationary truck in East Street, Bridport around 7.30am this morning.

One eyewitness said traffic was being diverted following the crash.

Eyewitness Nikki Kelly said: "The van went into the stationary scaffolding truck I believe."

Another eyewitness Maddie Barnes said: "All I saw was a scaffolding truck and transit van. The van's windscreen was severely damaged.

"My colleague didn't see anything at 7.40am, but when I arrived at 7.50am all traffic on East Street was turning around.

"When I arrived, there was two fire engines, a police vehicle and a police van, and an ambulance. At 8.25am I saw there was only one police car left at the scene."

A spokeswoman from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Rescue Service said: "We were called to East Street, Bridport at 7.36am this morning following a collision between a van and a lorry.

"Two crews from Bridport attended and used a pedal cutter and small tools to free the van driver.

"Our stop was at 7.56am.

"Both police and ambulance were on scene when we left."

A spokesman from Dorset Police said: "We received a report at 7.34am of a collision in East Street in Bridport involving a van and a scaffolding truck. It was reported that the road was blocked.

"Officers have attended, along with the ambulance service. We do not have any update in relation to any injuries at this time.

"Recovery is currently at the scene, we can confirm that there are no reports of any serious injuries."

The van has been recovered and the road is now fully clear.
