POLICE have said patrols have increased in Dorchester as the community remains in shock after a reported rape in the town centre.

Cordons were put in place at South Street Passage after Dorset Police received a report that a woman in her 30s was raped around 10.30pm in an alleyway on August 13.

South Street passage is one of the main walking routes to and from Acland Car Park.

The increase of police presence comes after Dorchester west councillor Janet Hewitt said women as young as 18 living in the area have told her they do not want to go out by themselves at night due to concerns.

Ms Hewitt said: "The community remains in shock. It's usually a safe place, but this situation has made people worry.

"My friend's daughters as young as 18 years old have told me they feel they can't go out alone and that they will only do so in a group.

"I've spoken to concerned parents too, who are asking their daughters to stay in groups if they're going out drinking at pubs and bars."

Neighbourhood inspector Darren Stanton of Dorset Police, said: "I fully appreciate that the recent report of rape in the town centre may have caused some worry for members of the public.

"I would like to reassure everyone that a detailed investigation is underway, led by detectives from Weymouth CID, to establish the circumstances of the reported incident.

"We're pursuing many lines of enquiry, including an examination of CCTV footage in the area.

"We recognise the impact this has had on the community in Dorchester and understand that people are worried. Our officers have been working hard to engage with members of our community to address any concerns.

"Now that the night-time economy trade is back, officers are increasing their presence as part of regular patrols in the town overnight.

"We will do all we can to ensure that everyone feels safe while going on a night out in the town, as well as throughout the daytime.

"If anyone has any concerns, we would encourage you to please speak with a member of your local neighbourhood policing team."
