Sometimes there's nothing better to eat than a burger.
It’s my takeaway of choice following a night out on the town or serves as a filling snack that leaves me satisfied when I finish.
It’s fair to say you aren’t short of places to grab a burger in Dorset, especially in Weymouth, given there’s multiple takeaways and restaurants to choose from.
Dorset Burger Company, based on King Street, is dubbed by many as one of the best places for a burger in the county.
Tripadvisor ranks DBC as the best place for burgers in Weymouth, a lifestyle website dubbed it among the best in the country and it has previously won dozens of awards over the years.
With this reputation, it’s clear going into this, I was going to have a great experience.
Struggle to pick a burger due to wide range of tasty sounding burgers
I visited Dorset Burger Company with a friend as we both fancied a burger and a stress-free dining experience at Sunday lunchtime.
We sat down and immediately looked at our menus to scan for any snacks or burgers to order.
We decided to order some chocolate brownie milkshakes to start our meal, which were well presented with its cream and brownie on top of the chocolate milkshake.
It was very difficult not to quickly drink the milkshake or pick out the brownie bites because it was so tasty. Maybe it was the sugar rush, but this was a brilliant milkshake and one to savour, not down like a shot.
I sipped on my milkshake as I pondered what burger to try. It wasn’t a case of struggling to find one I liked the sound of, but rather pick out of the four burgers I was genuinely interested in.
Ultimately I picked the American, a beef burger which contained Monterey Jack cheese, gherkin, red onions, American mustard and a bacon rasher.
My friend picked the equally tasty sounding Jack Stack, which even contained beer battered onion rings.
Our waitress, wearing a face visor, took our menus and we were able to take in the restaurant’s warm and welcoming interior.
The walls were covered in stunning photos and paintings of Dorset landscapes, cosy lighting with its tables spread out to be Covid-19 secure. There wasn’t many other diners in our area, but there was a nice friendly atmosphere.

First impressions of burger meal
The wait for the meal didn’t appear to take long as a waitress placed our plates onto the table.
My plate of food came with a burger without the top bun on, a bowl of salted fries and coleslaw. I initially found the ‘topless’ burger presentation a little odd but maybe it was the chef’s idea to proudly show the toppings and the layering of the burger.
I put the top bun back on and cut the burger into two to make it easier to eat.
The first bite was glorious – you could taste the quality of the locally sourced beef, the delicious bacon and the cheese and sauces.
The flavours all complemented each other and were well balanced – there wasn’t an overpowering taste of mustard or a strong taste of onions.
Every bite was satisfying, making me forget about McDonald's and Burger King’s burger meals and realise this was a proper burger.
The fries were also worth writing home about. I received a generous amount of seasoned fries coated with what I believe to be peri-peri salt.
They were so delicious and helped mop up the juices and sauces that came out of the burger. Bar the smeared coleslaw sauce, my plate was clear.
Our plates were cleared and I couldn’t possibly have any room for a dessert. But definitely next time.
'Pandemic or not, DBC has carried on doing what it knows best' - Closing thoughts on 'delicious' meal
Following the meal, I can understand why Dorset Burger Company is so revered and loved by locals, tourists and critics.
The meal was delicious, filling and the burger had an array of flavours. The chef didn’t try to jam as many fillings in to overwhelm the taste buds or make the burger difficult to eat. It was nice, tidy and simple burger.
What heightened the DBC experience was how I had two negative dining experiences during the same week, where I waited nearly an hour for my meal at one establishment and another served me disappointing food.
Here there was none of that and I left thinking how much of a good time I had eating a great meal while having a catch-up.
It goes to show how DBC has a set formula, know how to cook and present their burgers and ensure customers leave wanting to come back for more.
This comes after years of trading, learning what customers want and refining their skills and cooking, as well as mixing up their menu.
The service as well I have to single out for praise. We were allowed to sit before our booked time, we were suggested things to try and eat and found the two staff members who welcomed us to be very friendly.
It really has to be highlighted given how the hospitality industry has taken a knocking over the best part of two years and currently enduring a staff shortage.
The timing of their service, how attentive they were and how keen they were to ensure we were having a good time was great.
Pandemic or not, DBC has carried on doing what it knows best – meaty burgers with banging fries that don't disappoint.
