PUPILS across Dorset are celebrating GCSEs results after collecting their marks as, nationally, top grades have reached record highs.

With exams cancelled for second year in a row due to the pandemic, top-grade results have risen for pupils in England, Wales and North Ireland compared to last year.

The traditional A*-G grades have been scrapped and replaced with a number system going from 9-1, with the highest grade as 9 - with 1 the lowest, not including a U (ungraded).

Top grades (7/As and above) rose to 28.9 per cent from 26.2 per cent in 2020, while grades 4/Cs and above - seen as passes - rose to 77.1 per cent up from 76.3 per cent.

Those graduating from Year 11 have had to deal with an unusual and challenging 18-month period, and have had to work through a combination of disruption, online learning and a lack of face-to-face learning.

"I got full marks in maths, which is my favourite subject.

"During the pandemic I got used to online learning, but eventually I got bored of home learning and I missed learning in school with my friends."

Bethany will remain at her current school for her A Levels, where she plans to take up maths, further maths, physics and computer science.

Fellow Thomas Hardye pupil Sam Hargreaves said the year has been 'chaotic and stressful', but he is happy with his results.

He said: "I've done around 45 exams during the Easter period. It's been chaotic with the constant changes and quite stressful for us all, but I'm happy with the end result."

Grades have been based on students’ work assessed by their subject teacher using a range of materials.
