FOUR men have been arrested and a suspected gun has been seized after an armed police pursuit in Dorset - amid reports of alleged poaching.
On Friday, July 30 police received reports of alleged hare poaching and damage to property in Blandford.
Police said a four men were in a silver 4x4 driving in a field within the area, with the occupants allegedly poaching hares.
A spokesman from Dorset Police said: "We received a call regarding poaching in the rural area of Blandford.
"Reports stated those involved were driving a silver 4x4 vehicle in fields and targeting hares as well as damaging property.
"Officer's from Dorset Police's Patrol teams and armed response units attended, as well as the National Police Air Service (NPAS) and dog units.
"Following a pursuit a number of males attempted to make their escape by exiting the vehicle.
"Two dogs were seized as well as the vehicle and its contents.
"A suspected air rifle has also been seized."
Police Constable Sebastian Haggett, of Dorset Rural Crime Team, said: "Dorset Police take reports of rural crime seriously and we'll look to prevent, pursue and convict those that target rural communities."
According to Dorset Police, the highest number of hare coursing in the county occurs in both North and East Dorset rural area where the brown hare favours arable fields.
These types of offenders commit damage not only to the soil or seeded crops, but also gates, hedgerows and fencing.
Likewise the animals are chased and their deaths are often not instantaneous.
PC Haggett added: "We would urge anyone who witnesses poaching in progress to contact Dorset Police on 999.
"The team have been in the area to conduct reassurance patrols and engage with the rural community.
"Officers from the response units have been briefed about events and officers will continue to proactively patrol the area.
"Following a search four males have been arrested for numerous offences and have been interviewed.
"They have been released pending further enquiries."
