The definition of a city in the UK is a place which has been granted city status by the monarch. Historically, it was a requirement that a city had to have a cathedral - however times have changed, after the criteria was amended in the 19th century.
Although there are no official benefits to locals, the enhanced status could help boost the economy by attracting visitors.
Getting official recognition from the Queen will undoubtedly come with a certain sense of pride for many local people.
