YESTERDAY Dorset Council revealed how plans for a new contra-flow cycle lane at Weymouth Harbour remain on the agenda.
The cycle lane, which - as the name suggests - would flow in the opposite direction to oncoming cars, would take cyclists along Custom House Quay from the area around the town bridge to The Esplanade.
It comes as the council prepares to action the legal process for making permanent traffic changes at the quay.
The process for a new TRO (traffic regulattion order) is known to be lengthy and requires consultation with different agencies as well as the public.
As part of this exercise the council is preparing to hold an official public consultation via its website, after a public participation exercise was held about proposed changes at Custom House Quay last year.
That exercise also invited comment on other proposals at the harbour - the majority of which can now be seen in place as part of the temporary outdoor dining area.
The council intends to make the scheme permanent, which will mean parking bays taken out of use to facilitate the changes will not return.
However as part of the plans the authority is proposing four new loading bays for commercial harbour users.
The council's public consultation does not start until tomorrow.
However you can share your views informally in our quick reader straw poll below.
The council's proposal for permanent changes includes:
• Creation of a restricted parking zone between St Mary Street and a point to the east of South Parade
• Installing an on-road cycle lane between St Mary Street and The Esplanade, with an easterly flow
• Introducing four new loading bays on Custom House Quay and one in Maiden Street, plus retaining the large loading bay by fish loading platform
• Installing a disabled bay (two spaces) near fish loading platform
• Removal of eleven parking spaces on Custom House Quay to the west of Pilgrims Way
• Removal of one parking space on the corner of Custom House Quay junction with the Esplanade
