GROUPS of 'unauthorised encampments' have pitched up at sites across Weymouth.
According to witnesses at Weymouth Rugby Club a convoy of travellers arrived at the site around 6.30pm yesterday and 'bolt-cut' a metal gate and broke a wooden gate to gain entry on the playing field.
The convoy of cars, caravans and trailers with horses left the club car park around 11am today and reports suggest cars, caravans and horses are now at the Marsh, off Southview Road.
A Dorset Police spokesman said: "We are aware of a number of unauthorised encampments at different locations around Weymouth.
"Officers are monitoring the situation and are liaising with the local authority."
A spokesman from Weymouth Town Council said: "We're aware of several motorhomes parked on the grassed area at The Nothe and are working with the owners, Dorset Police and Dorset Council to remove them as soon as possible."
