CONSTRUCTION on a new Lidl has begun ahead of its opening later this year.
Lidl was granted permission by Dorset Council to build a new supermarket on Christy's Lane, Shaftesbury in a multi-million investment into the town.
It came after Tesco previously threatened to launch a judicial review over Lidl’s proposal for a store on the former cattle market site.
The new store will open its doors this Winter and create 40 full and part time jobs in the area.
A spokesman for Lidl said: "We are delighted to confirm that construction of our new Lidl store on Christy’s Lane, Shaftesbury is now underway which is set to open this Winter.
"Once opened, the store will create around 40 new full and part time jobs for the local economy and mark a multi-million pound investment in Shaftesbury.
"The new sustainable store will feature facilities including a 1,261m2 sales area, an instore bakery, customer toilets, solar panels on the roof as well as ample parking for bicycles and cars including two electric vehicle charging spaces.
"We look forward to updating the community further in due course and to delivering our fresh, quality and affordable produce to residents."
