DORSET Echo is running a year-long fundraising campaign in support of our nominated charity as part of celebrations to mark our 100-year anniversary.

We are delighted to announce that we have named the Royal British Legion (RBL) as our official charity of the year - which is also celebrating its centenary.

Having both launched in May 1921, we have set ourselves a target to raise £1,921 for the charity - and are appealing to our readers to donate and take part in fundraisers to raise money for the worthy cause.

The charity was formed in the aftermath of the First World War to fight for the rights of those who had given so much and come back to so little. Today, the RBL continues to provide life-changing help and support to the Armed Forces community and challenge injustices on their behalf.

The RBL is very active in the county with approximately 8,400 Legion members, located in 30 branches, which are supported by 15 RBL Clubs.

The Royal British Legion’s community fundraiser for Dorset, Claire Wainwright, said: “In the year when both organisations are celebrating their centenaries, we are very grateful to the Dorset Echo for choosing the Royal British Legion as its Charity of the Year.

“The ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has left some in our Armed Forces community in dire need of urgent assistance, and they are continuing to face further hardships. The support of the Dorset Echo and its readers will be as vital as ever as we continue our work to build better futures for those who have given so much for their country.

“Across Dorset, the RBL has always been supported by our dedicated network of volunteers, members, fundraisers and partner organisations, to whom we are extremely grateful. In our Centenary year we encourage Dorset Echo readers to join us in celebrating the RBL’s proud history and supporting our vital work helping those who have served and sacrificed.”
