EXTENSIVE renovations and alterations at Wraxall Manor have been approved by Dorset Council.

The planning request for Mr and Mrs Robert Boileau includes internal and external renovations, installing a new cupola over the stair and changes to windows, the porch and logia.

The works will include the addition of new fireplaces and surrounds in the library and playroom with changes to other fireplaces in the kitchen and family room.

The grade 2 listed building, which had been empty for two years, is said to have been neglected until bought by the present owners.

The Manor dates from the early to mid-17th century, and is understood to have been built by William Lawrence Jnr (c. 1613-1682) with records of Anthony Stawell (1574-1632) ‘residing at Wraxall’.

It is believed the manor dates from the time when Lawrence purchased part of the estate from Sir John Stawell (1600-1662) after the forfeiture of his estates during the Civil War.

The house was considerably extended in the period 1840-1887, and then again, according to Country Life magazine, around 1905 by Sir Edwin Lutyens.
