I learn with sorrow of the demise of the Weymouth Area over 55s Forum.
This group has been going for many years and filled a void in the lives of many of the Weymouth area’s senior citizens.
I remember when it was first mooted that Weymouth could benefit from such a group.
A meeting was called, I believe by then Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, and held at the Pavilion.
This meeting was attended by many of our senior citizens and it was agreed a Forum would be welcomed by local area seniors. A second meeting was arranged at the Rembrandt Hotel, again by W&PBC, whereby a group was set up under the chairmanship of the late Harry Franklin.
The group, known as WASPs, held its earlier meetings once a month in the Clipper in Weymouth, then later at the Angling Club.
The Forum went from strength to strength with changes of committees and chairs. The last, I believe, six years ago, the chair being the much respected Andy Hutchings. Sadly Andy lost his life during Covid lockdown.
Under Andy’s leadership the Forum had some excellent speakers especially those from local services. This gave the members a chance to update their knowledge on local issues and also express their worries and views, and they did. For senior members of our community this gives them a say and sense of inclusion.
On behalf all members past and present a big thank you to all the committees and chairpersons who have worked tirelessly to make this Forum a success .
The Weymouth Area Seniors Forum will be sorely missed.
