THE annual Bonfire Night and fireworks display on Weymouth seafront has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Weymouth Town Council announced with 'great disappointment' today (Wednesday, September 30) that the event on Thursday, November 5 will no longer take place.
The organisers have cited concerns due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent public safety concerns surrounding large gatherings.
Weymouth joins a number of other towns and cities who have also cancelled the November festivities, citing similar reasons.
The event usually sees residents and tourists gather on Weymouth seafront and at Bowleaze Cove to watch the fireworks display.
Councillor Graham Winter, Mayor of Weymouth Town Council, said: "It is with great sadness that we have had to make the decision to cancel this year’s Guy Fawkes event on the evening of the 5th of November.
"This annual event is hugely popular with local families and visitors, with the beach bonfire, fireworks, fun fair, and Guy Fawkes competition creating one of the year’s great community events.
“We look forward to bringing this event, along with many other of Weymouth’s favourite events and festivals, back bigger and better next year.”
