COUNCILLORS have granted an extension to he licence of an adult shop but balked at allowing a giant TV screen in window.
'My Amazing Fantasy' at Ranelagh Road in the Park District sought permission to renew its license, but was denied permission to place a TV screen larger than 23 inches in its window to advertise the shop's wares.
Members of Weymouth Town Council's Planning and Licensing Committee unanimously agreed to let the shop trade for another 12 months, but objected to plans for a bigger screen.
However the shop has been granted permission to open its back and front internal doors at once - as long as passers-by cannot see in. Proprietors want to allow better air flow.
Cllr Ken Whatley said: "When (the shop) used to be called 'Discretion' nobody knew it was a sex shop, it was just an ordinary shop on the corner. I think the TV size should stay the same.
"I've been called a prude in the past, but if people want to go in that's fine, I've got no problem with that, but there should be something to prevent people seeing the wares inside."
Cllr Jon Orrell agreed, saying: "This is one of the first thing visitors will see when they come out of the railway station. The shop obviously wants to make an impact with a big television screen but it could get enormous - I think we should keep the current conditions as they are."
Graham Winter added: "Whether you agree with the shop or not is neither here nor there - that's nothing to do with us. It has been run sensibly over the years it's been there and there's never been a problem.
"I also understand that the television screen is going to publicise non-controversial stuff, which I don't have a problem with really."
Cllr Trefor Morgan said: "I've never been a patron of this establishment, honestly, but it always seemed to me it was fairly discrete and it's nothing like what you would see in shops in Holland. I haven't got a problem."
Cllr Whatley added: "I've got no objection to the renewal of the licence, that's not a problem, it's the fact that in the past one of the previous owners applied for something and was given an inch but took a mile - he went over the top."
