A revised scheme for homes on at town centre scrap site in Weymouth has been lodged with Dorset Council.

The application, for four homes at the Upway Street site follows the rejection of six homes and parking on the same plot last summer.

The plot is to the rear of homes in Upway Street, King Street and Commercial Street, just south of the bus depot. It was once a coal depot and more recently run by Weymouth Reclamation as a scrap yard.

Agents say the new scheme fully addresses previous concerns and has been re-designed with extra attention to the flooding risk. The principle of homes on the site, claim the agents, has already been accepted by the council with the only questions over design and layout.

The applications proposes a mix of one and two-bed homes which the agent say would improve the character and appearance of the conservation area and be a better neighbour for residents than the ‘unsightly’ scrap yard.

Previously proposed parking spaces have been removed from the new scheme to allow for landscaped gardens and for the new, linked homes, to be placed in the centre of the plot rather than up against the eastern boundary as the previous application suggested. The redesigned homes are also lower than those which surrounds it, removing, the agents say, any risk of overlooking and issues of privacy. Bedrooms have been put on the first floor to mitigate any flooding risk.

Said the agents in a plea to accept the revised plans: “There will be no impact upon residential amenity or the character of the area…For Weymouth to be able to meet their housing requirements and as confirmed with the Masterplan vision, sites like this which are free of the planning constraints found in the majority of the town centre need to be relied upon to provide the maximum amount of new housing.”

Comments on the proposals can be made to Dorset Council by May 26. A decision is expected to be made by a planning officer, rather than go before a committee of councillors.

Both Weymouth Town Council and the Weymouth Civic Society were among those to object to the previous application.
