A PIONEERING surgeon from Weymouth has been awarded an honorary degree.
Former Olympic champion and orthopaedic surgeon John Wrighton was made a Doctor of Science by Bournemouth University during its annual graduation ceremony.
It follows his innovative work in knee and hip joint replacement, and eight years on the university board.
Mr Wrighton said: "I have dedicated this to my wife and children and in memory of my late parents." As well as contributing to health provision and education in Dorset, the former county High Sheriff was also captain of the British athletic team at the Rome Olympics in 1960.
He won two gold medals at the European Championships in Stockholm.
Speaking at the graduation, Dr Wrighton graduating told students: "Continue your determination to succeed and listen, and learn from colleagues as you go through life."
