A PUPIL from The Blandford School is to be tested for the coronavirus after feeling unwell following a family member’s return from Italy.

Headteacher at the school, Sally Wilson, wrote a letter to parents yesterday informing them of the news.

Ms Wilson wrote: “I am writing to inform you that one student at The Blandford School is to be tested for COVID-19 as a result of feeling unwell, combined with the recent return of a family member who had visited northern Italy.

“We anticipate that the test will occur at some point today (Monday). The results of the tests should be available within the next few days and we will update you as soon as we have further information.”

Ms Wilson went on to say that the family member did not visit a category one area and the decision to test the student was precautionary.

“I am sorry to share information that may be a cause for concern, however, it is important that you are aware of the situation.

“Your children’s health and safety is our highest priority, and we would like to reassure you that we are following all guidance issued.”

So far, there have been 40 confirmed cases of the coronavirus across the UK, none of which have been in Dorset.

Schools including St Aldhelm’s Academy, Jewell Academy, Broadstone Middle School, Corfe Hills, Queen Elizabeth’s and Ballard School have taken precautionary measures for staff and students feeling unwell.
