FORMAL objections to a scheme for six modern houses by Elite Homes on Overcombe Drive, Weymouth may result in a new application for the site.
More than twenty people attended a town council meeting earlier this month to raise their concerns about the proposal for an open site between numbers 38 and 40.
They told town councillors of worried about the size, scale and potential flood risk from the outline planning application as well as a loss of natural habitat and impact on the surrounding landscape.
Since then around twenty formal letters of objection have been received by Dorset Council from residents, Weymouth Town Council and the Weymouth Civic Society.
In the objection letters Mike Davis comments: “These houses are completely out of character with the surrounding houses and will be a complete eye sore as you transit the road. The design shows no sympathy to houses in the area and to abutting houses.”
Mark House said he worried about the possibility of flooding, but added: “The concern to a lot of current residents is also the massive invasion of privacy the new builds will make owing to their size (which is also an eyesore to the skyline). The houses directly below on the same side of the street will no longer have a private garden but that isn’t so much the issue…. The houses around the bend of the street will have the new builds looking directly into their back bedroom windows and bathrooms.”
Said Mrs Joanne Purslow: “The character of the proposed plans is not in keeping with the existing houses in Overcombe Drive and Ringstead Crescent.
“They will have an overbearing impact on the neighbouring properties, services and amenities. In the design the plans show as if it is built into the existing bank, these properties are going to rise above the road level, they will be four stories high having an overbearing and overwhelming impact on the surrounding area.”
Weymouth Town Council has also added its voice to the objections on the grounds of: “Design, visual appearance and materials, size and scale of the proposed development, risk of flooding and the impact on neighbouring properties, traffic generation, traffic congestion, parking on Overcombe Drive and highway safety, impact on the countryside. The elevated situation of the properties mean that they will be visible from miles around. There are also concerns regarding the natural environment, nature conservation and overshadowing. The applicant has suggested that there is no public right of way across the site and this needs to be queried.”
Ray Watton, from Elite Homes, said at the time of the town council committee that the finished development would look different from the initial plans. He told the Dorset Echo: “What we’ve submitted so far is just an outline application. I reviewed the site last week and realised we may be pushing the parameters too far. We are going to sit down with the council to design something much more sympathetic to the street scene and more fitting with the local area.”
