Firefighters are urging residents not to use chip pans after one caught fire in a kitchen.

Crews responded to a fire alarm in a Sherborne flat shortly after 5pm yesterday.

The incident commander inspected the property on arrival and discovered smoke inside.

A call for assistance was sent out while firefighters attempted to find and put out the fire.

In the property's kitchen, they found a chip pan on the hob and extinguished the blaze using a hose reel jet and thermal imaging camera.

Firefighters also used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the property.

A spokesman said: "Our advice is not to use a chip pan at all. A thermostatically controlled deep fat fryer is far safer, as it can’t overheat.

"There are two main causes of chip pan fires: the oil or fat overheats and catches fire; or the oil or fat spills onto the cooker, either because the pan has been filled too high or because wet chips have been put into the hot oil, causing it to bubble up and overflow."
