South Dorset MP Richard Drax declared himself "saddened" as he decried the Supreme Court's decision to declare the prorogation of parliament unlawful.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled that Prime Minister Boris Johnson's decision to suspend parliament for five weeks was unlawful and that the prorogation was void.

Mr Drax expressed his disappointment at the decision, saying he believed it was politically motivated.

He said: "I am deeply saddened by what I am sure people will see as a political decision. My chief concern is that now that the courts have seen fit to interfere with politics that future decisions made in the House of Commons by elected representatives will be vulnerable to future challenge, which run the risk of undermining the basis on which our system is established.

"I am very saddened, very disappointed, and feel this is evidence to me that there are very powerful people across the land determined to stop Brexit."

The ruling was agreed upon unanimously by all of the Supreme Court's 11 judges. Lady Hale, who announced the court's decision, said that it is now up to parliament to decide what course of action it pursues next.

Boris Johnson has come under repeated fire for his decision to suspend parliament, with people arguing that the move was designed to evade scrutiny over the Brexit process. The Prime Minister denied that the move was related to Brexit.

Had it been declared lawful, the prorogation was due to continue until October 14, leaving only just over two weeks until the October 31 Brexit deadline.

West Dorset MP Sir Oliver Letwin said: "This judgement has huge implications. We will all need to take the time to consider them. In the meanwhile, Parliament will clearly need to reconvene."

In the wake of the court's ruling, a large number of members of parliament were calling on Mr Johnson to resign as Prime Minister.

However, Mr Drax said he does not think Mr Johnson should resign. He said the Prime Minister should stay on and continue working towards delivering Brexit.

Edward Morello, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for West Dorset, said: "The highest Court in the land has made it clear that the Prime Minister misled Her Majesty The Queen, misled Parliament, and misled the British people. Parliament must meet immediately and Boris Johnson must be held to account.”
