A woman who was left disabled after a car crash walked down the aisle on her wedding day.
Grace McGowan, aged 27 from Weymouth, married the love of her life Nick Capaldi at Stockbridge Farm Barn near Sherborne.
Despite not being able to walk, Grace didn’t let her disability stop her from making her dream a reality.
Grace was injured in a crash in February 2014.
She used a ReWalk exoskeleton, a device which helps people with mobility problems to walk, and was accompanied down the aisle by her brother and mum Helen.
She said: “I just wanted to walk down the aisle. I think everyone should be able to walk down the aisle on their wedding day and I had the opportunity to do it.”
Her mother said: “The highlight of the wedding will be not only them showing their love and commitment to each other, but Grace is determined to walk down the aisle with the aid of a ReWalk.”
“She persevered, I didn’t think she could do it because it was so hot and a long way for her to go.”
It had been so hot that the glue of her ReWalk which was attached to her shoes had melted away.
She added: “She really had to struggle but between her and her brother who was behind her, they did it. Everyone was crying.”
“I was extremely proud of all my children, I am one very proud mummy.”
Grace said the guests had no idea about her plan, but she wanted to ‘surprise’ them.
She told the Echo that meeting Nick has vastly changed and improved her life.
The pair met each other through an unusual twist of fate.
After suffering her spinal injury Grace looked to purchase a bungalow in Dorchester, which was converted into accessible accommodation.
But little did she know that the property owner would later become her mother in law.
The pair had got on very well during the sale process.
In fact, she had said to her daughter (Nick’s sister) – ‘why can’t Nick meet someone as nice as her?’
Grace then met Nick on the dating website – Plenty of Fish – and discovered she had purchased the house from his parents.
She said: “It turned out his parents were the people I bought the house from through a happy coincidence.
“I had no idea at the time. Nick didn’t really tell her that he was meeting me. He mentioned he was going on a date with someone then he showed her photographs and she said: ‘Oh my god, that’s Grace!’
“We then went around to her house to surprise her, she was really happy and excited.”
The pair now live together in Dorchester with their four dogs.
