Dorset firefighters were called across the border to a car fire.
A crew from Sherborne Fire Station was called at 8.16pm on Thursday to a vehicle on fire at Milborne Port in Somerset.
They saw smoke from the fire en route to the site.
Firefighters wore breathing apparatus while putting out the fire.
They requested assistance from the environmental support unit of Gillingham Fire Station to clear fuel and oil that was leaking from the vehicle onto the road.
The Highways Agency were also present to close the road.
The crew returned to the station at 10.35pm.
