A DEAD dolphin floating off Portland is attracting concerns about an increasing problem with pollution and rubbish being washed ashore.
Portland resident Paul Stone, who took a black-and-white shot of the mammal bobbing in waves around 50 metres off Chesil Beach, said he believes it may be a young dolphin due to its size.
"I spotted it surrounded by old nets and rubbish waiting to washed up - loads of sea birds were taking an interest", he said.
"It's such a shame - I don't think we are seeing more (dead dolphins) - but more rubbish, yes.
"A gannet was rescued from fishing gear by a brave diver only last week, and the bird is now recovering.
"Locals like me call this corner 'dead man's cove' for a reason."
Wildlife charity Dorset Wildlife Trust advises residents not to touch any dead marine animals that wash ashore, as they can carry disease and infection.
Anyone who finds a marine mammal washed up is advised to report it immediately by calling 01305 264620 or emailing enquiries@dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk. It is advised you take a photograph but do not touch.
