A FAMILY of alpacas have taken up residence at Fancy’s Farm on Portland – and visitors can join them on a walk.
The alpacas are set to boost tourism on the island, forming a new attraction as woolly companions for walks around the island.
Director of Portland Alpacas Shawn Hume said:“The alpacas will soon be showcasing their presence with specially produced alpaca walking tours.
“This year we’ll be going all out with the alpacas and we’re inviting others to join us."
He added: “Walking an alpaca on Portland will not only be fun, but it will help to promote good exercise on the rugged island.
“The alpacas are so friendly and love to meet new people.”
The walks will begin at Fancy’s Farm and the routes will be determined according to the weather.
Traditional afternoon tea and cakes will be provided by the Heights Hotel, which has welcomed the attraction. The hotel also hosts a visitors information centre.
Portland Visitor Information Centre manager Mike Deadman said:“Portland is so well-versed in welcoming new and exciting activities.
“With so much to explore on the island, having some of the best views in Britain, there has never been a better place from which to tour.”
He added: “When people come to Portland, they’re often amazed at just how much there is to do here, so it’s imperative we welcome every visitor opportunity.
“It is activities like alpaca walking, which offer something that little bit different to other activities in the area that will help encourage people to come and visit Portland.”
Alpaca walking experiences will be available to book from March 1 with advance bookings only.
Bookings can be made by calling Karen Hume on 07966 671877.
Walking times will be between 10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm.
