A private security force could soon be patrolling the streets of Weymouth and Portland in a scheme aimed at deterring criminals.
Weymouth Neighbourhood Security describes itself as a ‘residential security patrol service’ and plan to go live next month.
Its vans, equipped with GPS trackers, bright lights and four-way dash cams, will patrol the streets of their customers who have registered to the £4.99 monthly subscription service.
The drivers will be SIA card holders, CRB checked and trained in advance first aid. They will log any activity they deem to be suspicious and report any illegal activity to the police.
It comes amid reduced funding for Dorset Police with fewer officers patrolling the streets.
The founder of Weymouth Neighbourhood Security, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “A few years ago, I was subject to a theft at one of my businesses. In the past year, every time I log onto Facebook or read the Echo website, I see a theft or burglary in the area.
“This is through no fault of the police and it is not a dig at them for not being out patrolling. If you don’t have the money, then you can’t have the resources.
“I know that there is nothing they would love more than to be out policing but unfortunately it’s not happening, and I can’t see it happening for a long time.
“With Dorset Police having their budget cut time and time again, it is just impossible for them to patrol the streets like they used to. They just don’t have the resources or time anymore.
“This is where Weymouth Neighbourhood Security comes into play. First and foremost, we are not and never will be trying to impersonate the police or take the law into our own hands.
“Our aim is to patrol the streets of Weymouth and Portland from 9pm until 6am, seven days a week to deter crime and report any suspicious activity that we see.
“We are not trying to police anything or be a night ninja. Literally deter and scare off these thieves as they do not wish to be caught.”
Dorset Police has responded to the launch of the private security firm.
A spokesman said: “This appears to be a private enterprise and without knowing the specific details of the activity taking place and the arrangements between the company and its clients, it is not appropriate for us to comment further on it.
“We will always respond to reports of any crimes taking place, whether it is from a private company or a resident, and take action where appropriate.
“Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or burglaries in their area to police at www.dorset.police.uk, via email 101@dorset.pnn.police.uk or by calling 101. If a crime is taking place always dial 999.”
