COUNCIL chiefs have hailed works to restore Weymouth's historic Jubilee Clock.
The clock was erected to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. It has since become Grade II listed.
Works were completed on June 1.
Cllr Jeff Cant, Briefholder for Assets and Finance and Leader of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, said: “We are delighted with the result of recent restoration works to the Jubilee Clock tower.
"This historically important landmark is one of the defining symbols of Weymouth. It therefore needed careful management by a select team of specialists, overseen and managed by the borough council.
“We have put a great deal of time and effort in to the restoration to get it back to its original beauty and colours. Some of the key areas of work included the dials, dial numerals and the intricate working parts of the clock. These required cleaning and re-decoration in specialist paints. The areas of gold paint have been re-decorated with lacquer to help with future preservation.
“We discovered the inside of the clock chamber was corroded so this has been thoroughly cleaned and re-decorated. The weather vane and cupola at the top of the clock have also been repaired and re-gilded. The inside access of the tower has been brought up to modern safety standards with a new internal ladder and platform. Specialists also assisted us with re-decorating the shields to a Weymouth emblem design. This design was taken from archive pictures.”
